The following information is presented to inform producers on which laboratories may be used when completing genotype testing under the VSFCP. There are two groups of laboratories that complete genotype testing- one group has been CFIA approved and the other group has not been CFIA approved.
Under Pathway 2 and Pathway 3 of the VSFCP, producers are asked to take two samples from participating rams (See Sections 5, 6 and 7 of the handbook). As part of the VSFCP regulations, one sample must be sent to an approved laboratory, while the second sample can be sent to a laboratory that has not been approved.
Below is a list of both approved laboratories and non-approved laboratories.
It is of the utmost importance to send your samples to the appropriate labs to meet the requirements for Pathway 2 and 3. If you have any questions regarding which labs you are required to send your samples to, please contact the Scrapie Project Coordinator.

The VSFCP covers the cost of obex testing (producers will not be invoiced) if conducted at one of the following labs:
Laboratories approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for scrapie genotyping are acceptable to the CFIA Terrestrial Animal Health Division for export and flock certification testing. The current list of USDA-approved labs for scrapie genotyping can be found on the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website under Approved Laboratories for Genotype Testing.
